For parents

First visit by the first birthday

An early, happy visit while nothing is wrong is the best way to keep it that way. Here’s how to help at home.

  • Under three: a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste, twice a day
  • Three to six: a pea-sized amount, with your help brushing
  • Water, not juice or milk, in the bottle at bedtime
  • Talk about the visit positively; skip words like “hurt” or “needle”
  • Sealants on the back molars around age six and twelve

Questions

Kids’ dentistry FAQ

When should my child first see a dentist?

By their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth. The first visit is short, gentle and mostly about showing you how to care for their teeth.

Can I stay with my child?

Yes. Young children usually sit on your lap. Older kids sometimes prefer to be brave on their own, and that’s fine too.

Is fluoride safe for children?

Yes, in the right amount. It’s one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities. We’ll show you how much toothpaste to use for your child’s age.

What are sealants?

A thin, clear coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. It takes minutes, needs no needles and blocks most cavities in those teeth.
